Spring is finally here and Winchester residents are taking advantage of the warm weather and beautiful wildflower scenery with a docent led hike on the Bridgeview Trail. A group of Winchester residents recently embarked on a docent-led hike on the Bridgeview Trail. Hikers enjoyed three miles of panoramic views with a 600-foot elevation gain while enjoying beautiful scenery and admiring the famous Foresthill Bridge. The bridge is the third highest in the United States and the highest bridge in California, towering 730 feet above the stream bed of the North Fork of the American River.
Foresthill Bridge is an impressive 2,428 feet long and underwent a seismic retrofit, completed in 2015, to make it more resistant to earthquakes and other natural disasters. The project cost a whopping $74.4 million and took four years to complete.
Foresthill Bridge has been featured in major motion pictures including “XXX”. In that film, actor Vin Diesel drives a red corvette off the bridge and parachutes out of the car mid-flight before it crashes into the canyon. Other, less fiery movies, featuring the bridge include: “The Phantom”, released in 1996, and “The Ugly Truth”, a 2009 film.
The docent on this trail hike was an expert in local history, a published author on local trails and a retired Army Colonel! The Bridgeview Trail area is known for its hiking and mountain biking trails, grand views, and the river to cool off in. You’ll find families, dog walkers and adventurers of all skill levels in the area.
